Humboldt Appellation

Cannabis Appellations Program (CAP)

An appellation of origin is a protected designation that identifies the geographical origin of a product and typically includes production requirements. CDFA’s Cannabis Appellations Program (CAP) will help prevent the misrepresentation of a cannabis good’s origin and promote regional collaboration around cannabis production.

The cannabis appellation program was spun out of California Senate Bill 67 authored by Sen. Mike McGuire, D-Healdsburg, and signed into law by Gov. Gavin Newsom in the fall of 2020.

When it launches, the program will allow cannabis growers to place that geocentric designation on their labels. Three growers in the same region are required.

The appellation areas have not yet been named.

First, the regulations must be finalized, a process that was delayed when the state split duties between two key California departments — Food and Agriculture and Cannabis Control. The former introduced a proposed draft and will adopt the regulations, which have undergone public comment periods. Cannabis Control will have the responsibility of the labeling.

In the meantime, growers across Sonoma County and into the Emerald Triangle of Mendocino and Humboldt counties await the crucial rules of the program established Jan. 1, 2022.
